Twitter vs Facebook For Business

by Brian on 11/30/2009

One of the first things that happens when someone starts with Twitter and Facebook is a slight sense of overwhelm.

Often the immediate question – because the tools are available to do so:

Can I just post the same things at both places?

Can you? Yes.

Should you? No.

Here’s the thing – you’re probably going to see some cross-over in who you’re interacting with in the two places. When they see you’re doing this stuff on auto-pilot, how do you think they’ll feel?

Your answer: they’ll feel like they’re just a faceless object you’re marketing to. This is the last thing anyone wants to feel like.

The two platforms are different, and serve different purposes.

I always feel like Twitter is the meet-and-greet, and Facebook the smaller, intimate dinner party with close friends.

Not an exact comparison, but the point is thus: you wouldn’t conduct yourself the same in those two environments in real life, so why would you do so online?
